WWF Centre and Bosco Pantano

"Twilight reigns supreme in this maze of tall deciduous trees. There is thick undergrowth, too; and I measured an old lentiscus - a shrub, in Italy - which was three metres in circumference... Policoro has the tangled beauty of a tropical swamp... and if you penetrate their verdant labyrinth you can even imagine yourself to be in some primitive part of the globe where the foot of man has never trod".

This is how the English travel writer Norman Douglas described Bosco Pantano of Policoro at the beginning of 20th century, and this is how this unique wetland forest stretching to the sea looks like still today.

On the borders of the forest there is also a WWF wild animal rescue centre.

The valleys of Mount Pollino

pollino

Silent age-old beech tree woods and pine forests grow at higher altitudes; chestnuts and oaks cover the lower slopes, while Mediterranean scrub is predominant in the valleys.

The symbol of the Park is the rare Loricate Pine, which derives its name from its bark, that looks like a "lorica", or a cuirass.

The Park, with its relaxing atmospheres, is a perfect nature gym for everybody.

Monticchio Lakes

monticchio

An enchanting lush and verdant vegetation, with thick woods of beeches, pines, firs and chestnuts, surrounds Monticchio Lakes. Formed on the crater of an extinct volcano, Lago Piccolo (Small Lake) and Lago Grande (Big Lake) are separated by a stream and look like two gems, nestled in a beautiful natural landscape, glinting in the sunlight and shimmering magically at night.

Nature lovers will enjoy exploring these sites and tasting the lightly sparkling water that comes out from natural springs.

La Grancia is the largest history theme park in Italy. It extends over an area of 12 hectares, in the extremely beautiful natural scenery of the Grancia Forest, near Brindisi di Montagna, a picturesque village of Albanian origin with a ruined tower standing high above the Park, as part of the landscape that welcomes the visitor. The Park is just 12 kms away from Potenza, the capital town of Basilicata, and 4 kms from the Basentana highway, which is the main road crossing the whole region.

The Park has 6 equipped areas for artistic and cultural performances and shows, where visitors have the opportunity to get to know the traditions, folklore and culture of Lucanian rural people.

The Small Lucanian Dolomites

E-mail Print

dolomiti

The Nature Park of Gallipoli Cognato and the Small Lucanian Dolomites is a regional park of Basilicata. It straddles the provinces of Matera and Potenza and comprehends the villages scattered along the upper- and middle reaches of river Basento and on the hills around Matera.

The Lucanian Dolomites are mountains of quartziferous sandstone shaped by atmospheric agents and the geological events that have occurred in this area of Basilicata, in the province of Potenza, through the ages.

They are named "Dolomites" because their high and sharply pointed peaks resemble some of the most renowned peaks of the Alpine Dolomites; because of their peculiar forms, they have been given very imaginative names.

Castelmezzano and Pietrapertosa are two extremely picturesque villages nestled among the rocks and set amidst the stunning sceneries and the breathtaking landscapes of these mountains.
