The Small Lucanian Dolomites

The Nature Park of Gallipoli Cognato and the Small Lucanian Dolomites is a regional park of Basilicata. It straddles the provinces of Matera and Potenza and comprehends the villages scattered along the upper- and middle reaches of river Basento and on the hills around Matera.

The Lucanian Dolomites are mountains of quartziferous sandstone shaped by atmospheric agents and the geological events that have occurred in this area of Basilicata, in the province of Potenza, through the ages.

They are named "Dolomites" because their high and sharply pointed peaks resemble some of the most renowned peaks of the Alpine Dolomites; because of their peculiar forms, they have been given very imaginative names.

Castelmezzano and Pietrapertosa are two extremely picturesque villages nestled among the rocks and set amidst the stunning sceneries and the breathtaking landscapes of these mountains.
